European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS)

Founded in 1991, the ESCRS (www.escrs.org) is Europe's leading organisation for cataract and refractive surgeons. The Society, which fulfils a worldwide leadership role in its area of specialisation, has over 5,000 members from over 90 countries.

The ESCRS offers a unique forum for discussion, leadership and learning which ensures that international expertise is shared by ophthalmologists all over Europe. ESCRS headquarter is based in Dublin, Ireland. The business model which ESCRS puts into practice is the sharing of ideas, research and experience not only between its European members but colleagues in the wider world of ophthalmology.

ESCRS coordinates and manages several committees, including those dealing with research, cornea, refractive, quality management, quality of life and finance.

Greece

Belgium Partner Hellenic Society of Intraocular Implant and Refractive Surgery established in 1984, is one of the major scientific societies in the field of ophthalmology in Hellas (Greece). The aim of HSIOIRS is the spread of knowledge in the field of interest, by organizing scientific meetings, instruction courses, wet labs, scientific publications and by collaborating with other Hellenic and foreign Ophthalmological Societies.

Hungary

The Hungarian SCRS (SHIOL) was founded twenty years ago, in December 1988. Daniel Vorosmarthy the inventor of the oculopressor was the president for six years. The Society is very popular amongst Hungarian Ophthalmologists; about 400 members participate in the annual congress.

Italy

Societa Oftalmologica Italiana (SOI) was founded in 1879, the Italian Society of Ophthalmology (SOI) is a Non Profit Organisation. SOI aims to improve services provide to the community, to promote the scientific progress of Ophthalmology and to defence the ethical and deontological principles of this sector. The Association has 4500 members and organise two yearly events.  In the May, the meeting gives special attention to international speakers, whereas in November, the congress is a consolidated appointment for Italian ophthalmologists.

Scandinavia

The Scandinavian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery is an umbrella organisation for the Scandinavian National Societies.
The Executive Committee is formed by the president Thomas Olsen, the vice president Esko Jarvinen, the secretary  Magnus Otto, the treasurer Svein Ove Semb and the Board member Eydis Olafsdottir.

Slovakia

Belgium Partner Slovak Society of Ophthalmology has 538 members. Society is umbrella for 6 sections. One of them is SCIRS (Slovak Cataract Implant and Refractive Society).

Society organizes three scientific meetings per year (two meetings with miscellaneous topics and one meeting with SCIRS topic). President of the Society is Prof. Milan G. J. Izak, PhD, FEBO

Sweden

EyeNet Sweden was instituted in January 2003, as a centre of competence within the field of quality registries. The Swedish National Cataract Register (NCR), with its long experience of data collection and research, formed the framework of this new developing centre. EyeNet Sweden’s general purpose is to start, develop, use and support the national quality registries and to improve analyses and use of outcome data.

Turkish Ophthalmology Society (TOS)

United Kingdom

United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons UKISCRS. The UKISCRS is at the forefront of promoting education and research in the fields of cataract and refractive surgery. The society advances and promotes best clinical practice in both fields using evidence based protocols. The society encourages its member surgeons to audit their outcomes and is therefore keen to be involved with the EUREQUO project as a tool both for individual surgeon outcomes study, and also as a facility to compare results with other surgeons in Europe. The UKISCRS organises two meetings every year with a host of national and international speakers.
