European Registry of Quality Outcomes for Cataract and Refractive Surgery Today there are over 221,000 surgeries in the database. One important use of the database is benchmarking.
In the EUREQUO system it is now possible to compare your own outcomes with others for judgment and benchmarking purpose.
Optimal visual outcome given the preoperative condition is one important achievement. A surgeon can identify her/his own patients’ visual outcome (red) compared with other surgeons’ patients (green) as shown in the graph below. In this graph all patients’ outcome is shown. It is possible to do the same comparison of different selections of patients.

Another important achievement is to have no or few complications. In EUREQUO the occurrence of a capsule complication is shown graphically. In the diagram below the percentage of capsule complications is shown. Also in this case different selections on demography and co-morbidity can be done.

An important outcomes parameter is biometry prediction error. EUREQUO gives the possibility to compare the spread of values and central tendency of this parameter with other surgeons. The result is shown with correct sign which means that it will be obvious if patients become more myopic or more hyperopic than intended. Such a finding will initiate a clinical improvement work in order to get better results.

From this EUREQUO diagram it is obvious that the surgeon (red box) makes his patients more hyperopic than intended and also have a certain spread of values which will make discussions with the patient about what to expect after surgery more difficult. Many surgeons achieve better result with smaller box and more centered on 0. This fact should initiate a clinical improvement work for the surgeon with red box.
